Precision–imprecision Equivalence in a Broad Class of Imprecise Hierarchical Uncertainty Models

Hierarchical models are rather common in uncertainty theory. They arise when there is a ‘correct’ or ‘ideal’ (so-called first-order) uncertainty model about a phenomenon of interest, but the modeler is uncertain about what it is. The modeler’s uncertainty is then called second-order uncertainty. For most of the hierarchical models in the literature, both the firstand the second-order models are...

Decision Making with Monotone Lower Probabilities of Infinite Order

Properties of convex and monotone capacities of infinite order in Polish spaces are studied and used to justify the representation of certain situations of imprecise risk (imprecisely known probabilities) by lower probabilities, which are monotone of infinite order. Decision making with imprecise risk is then modeled, and linear utility theory is shown to be generalizable to the case of impreci...

Distribution of Expected Utility in Second-order Decision Analysis

In decision analysis maximising the expected utility is an often used approach in choosing the optimal alternative. But when probabilities and utilities are vague or imprecise expected utility is fraught with complications. Studying secondorder effects on decision analysis casts light on the importance of the structure of decision problems, pointing out some pitfalls in decision making and sugg...

Generalised Risk Constraints in Decision Trees with Second-Order Probabilities

Recently, representations and methods analysing decision problems where probabilities and values (utilities) are associated with belief distributions over them (second order representations) have been suggested. In this paper we present an approach to how imprecise information can be modelled by means of second-order distributions and how a risk evaluation process can be elaborated by integrati...

Some Second Order Effects on Interval Based Probabilities

In real-life decision analysis, the probabilities and values of consequences are in general vague and imprecise. One way to model imprecise probabilities is to represent a probability with the interval between the lowest possible and the highest possible probability, respectively. However, there are disadvantages with this approach, one being that when an event has several possible outcomes, th...
